A Spoken Word Poem for Christmas

A Spoken Word Poem for Christmas

Worship ideas, Youth Ministry Ideas
This was a poem I wrote a few years ago and I decided to put it together in a video. Christianity really is a Rags to Riches story. We were outcasts, alone, and broken and through Jesus we are transformed into royalty. We who were nothing are adopted by God. But this story also has a Riches to Rags twist because the same Jesus who was a king became a baby in a manger for us.  Here is the full text:  this christianity thing is a real rags to riches storylike cinderella going from ashes to ball gowns, from servant to princess It’s like david going from shepherd to king, like gideon transformed from coward to warrior like annie the orphan becoming annie warbucks like luke discovering the heritage of…

Worship: A Picture on the Fridge

Devotional Thoughts, Spiritual Ideas, Worship ideas
I came home yesterday and found a picture that my son had colored for me sitting on my desk. Meredith had written "TO: DADDY" at the top and "FROM: NATHAN" at the bottom. I looked at the picture and my heart swelled. It is still sitting here beside of me. It isn't really a picture, just a random collection of colors and lines, but still it made me smile, still makes me smile. As soon as Nathan saw me he was telling me about the picture that he made for me. "Daddy! I mad you a picture! Did you see it!" and wouldn't be still until I not only told him I saw it, but went back and looked at it with him. I told him that I loved it…

Band-Aid Praise

Band-Aid Praise

Creative Worship, Worship ideas, Youth Ministry Ideas
This is a simple praise activity that we used to open up a discussion of God's healing. Pass out index cards and pens to everyone in your group. You will need enough Band-Aids for everyone in your group. Enlist enough volunteers so that you can pass out the Band-Aids quickly and quietly. During this entire worship experience I played soft guitar music and then transitioned into the song at the end. I also placed both of the verses on the screen as we got to them. Materials Needed: index cards band-aids pens volunteers to pass out the band-aids Say: You can’t be in this place without a wound on your heart. This is a broken world and we are broken people and as you live through these days then you…

Lay it Down

Creative Worship, Worship ideas
I know I have mentioned this in the past, but I used this video as part of my sermon this morning and I was reminded at how powerful it is. The people who took a little poem of mine and turned it into this piece of worship amaze me. But if you want it for your church you can download it below. Lay it Down MPG (83 MB)

Hymns: Cultural Touchstones

My Life, Worship ideas
I have to admit if you asked me if I would rather listen to Pillar or the Gaither Vocal Band I would choose Pillar every time. I am not a hymn type guy. I like music that has a little bit of a beat to it, and generally I prefer a song led by a band rather than just a piano and a song leader. But there is something to be said about "classic" hymns of the church. When people have these conversations they normally talk about the deep doctrine contained in them. That isn't really much of a reason for me because 1) newer songs have deep doctrine too and 2) just because a song is old doesn't mean that it can't have flawed doctrine. For me what makes…
