Good Friday

Devotional Thoughts, Good Friday Ideas, Spiritual Ideas
We have come once again to Good Friday and once again I am amazed and humbled by the sacrifice of God. I know me. I live with me. I am aware of my faults and shortcomings. I am aware of the things that I shouldn't do that I do and the countless things that I should do that I don't do. I think it was Stephen King who said that one thing about a writer is that you can't deceive yourself. I am fully aware of my heart, my mistakes, and where I am lacking. And God is fully aware too. And yet, in the middle of all of that knowing, in the middle of all of that lacking God still chooses me, picks me, looks at me and says, "Yes,…

The Veil Resown Sermon

The Veil Resown Sermon

Good Friday Ideas, Sermons
Tonight I preached a new sermon about how we as Christians are "re-sewing the curtain" that was torn into at the time of Jesus' death. I also wrote a new story to go along with it. You can find the story (The Park) here. I have never actually placed the full text of a sermon up here. This is really just the notes that I used to preach from. We called it a Service of Hope and Healing. We had three worship stations as people entered the building on the way into the auditorium. The first was a station for "Letting…

Good Friday Ideas: Crucify

Good Friday Ideas: Crucify

Creative Worship, Good Friday Ideas
To me one of the big parts of the story of the cross is when the crowd chooses Barabbas over Jesus. In that moment when they all yell, "CRUCIFY!" I want to think that I would be different. I want to think that I would say, "we want Jesus and not Barabbas." But knowing what I know I think I would have to stand and shout for His death. It sounds harsh. It sounds wrong, but here is what I know. I am a sinner. Every time I try to forget that I find myself chasing after sin again. I am a sinner and because of that I deserve to die. The only way for my sins to be paid--the only way for me to have a relationship with God--was…
