Finding Prayer

Much of my creative and professional life these days seems to be focused on finding creative ways to pray. Whether it is my book Creative Prayer or stuff for my sister or my most recent assignment for LifeWay it seems like I am always finding new ways to help people connect with God in prayer.

But the funny thing is that in my own life I almost always pray in the same way. Aside from my daily walking around prayer life I pretty much pray by using a prayer journal. I find someplace quiet and sit down and breathe and then write out what I am thinking and praying. When life is really crazy I will keep a separate sheet of paper handy to come write things down that I have to deal with later. This separate "to do" list keeps me from worrying about things until I am finished praying.

I have tried other things and from time to time I will engage in some of these creative ideas, but for me I have found that journaling works best. Of course for most things in my life writing seems to work best. I feel that I was created to write. It is how I express myself so it is only natural that I would connect with God through writing. That is how I connect with myself as well.

But one of the things I have learned over the past few years is that everyone else wasn’t created like me. As much as I would like to say that to have a vital prayer life you should have a prayer journal I have learned that other people don’t respond to writing in the same way. That is why I feel like it is so important to take a creative approach to praying and find how it is that you were created.

With all of that said, when I get a time where someone else has set up a creative prayer experience I love to participate. It is nice to step back and experience from time to time. After writing I think that I respond best to prayer that use the body. Sometimes when the world around me seems like it won’t be quiet and let me think much less pray I spend some time kneeling and breathing to focus my mind on God. In the same way anything with taste always helps me to break through the mundane and connect with God in a fresh way.

So what about you? How do you pray? What is your art? How do you connect with God?

I connect with God through poetry – writing and reading it. Being quiet enough to hear the words, and then being quiet enough to understand them.
