At the church Meredith works for this week they are passing out clothes, diapers, and other essential items for the evacuees who are now living here in Eufaula. Of course everyone in town wants to feel like they are doing something so the donation room is packed with stuff.
Well, as it turns out it wasn’t only evacuees who went and picked up stuff, but people who live in Eufaula too. I don’t even know how to respond to that. I don’t understand why someone would try to take advantage of such a tragic situation.
That brings up an interesting point about churches and helping people. If you don’t work in a church then you probably don’t know that on a regular basis people come to the church who need money. As a church we are happy to help people, it is part of what we are here for, but as word gets around that you are willing to help it gets harder and harder to help people. Now that Meredith and I work at 2 different churches we get a chance to see people who are making the rounds. You wouldn’t believe how many people tell us one story and Meredith’s story another. You wouldn’t believe how many people claim that they can’t pay their power bill, but they want us to give them the cash and are upset when we want to pay the bill.
Now there are some people in town that legitimately need help. We want to be able to help as many of those as we can, but the people who are scamming us make it hard to get our limited funds to the right place. So we end up having to research those people that we are helping and it just takes a lot of the fun out of it.
But we are not going to stop helping just because some people take advantage of the situation. We should help those who need help and just because sometimes we get taken advantage of shouldn’t stop us. The way I see it is simple. It is my job to help people, that is what I am called to do. If you want to take advantage of that then that is your problem, not mine. I can’t control you. I only know that I have to help.
