Insecurities Drama

Insecurities
written by Shane
adapted by Jen Vannette

Cast: Readers 1-3

Tone: The presentation of this piece is as much about tone as it is about the words. I like to think of it as almost a rap without a beat. SPEAKERS should vary the speed and volume as they are presenting to add some dynamic punch to this piece.

Set-Up: The three SPEAKERS should stand in a line a few steps from the front of the stage. SPEAKER 1 stands stage right of center. S PEAKER 2 stands to the left of center, and SPEAKER 3 stands in the middle. During their turn to speak they will step towards the front of the stage. During the overlap both SPEAKERS will be at the front and then the SPEAKER who has just finished talking will step back. SPEAKER 3 will stay downstage after delivering the last line. The two echo lines are given from the SPEAKERS original upstage position.

Option: Open the sketch with a black stage. Spread SPEAKERS 1 and 2 out towards the sides of the stage. As each person begins to speak light them with a spotlight. Let the light slowly fade onto and off of each speaker. The echoes at the end should be presented in the dark.

SPEAKER 1:

I had a vision of asking God one question
One chance to hear directly
To know completely
To remove all of the doubt and just
Hear truth

My question wasn’t why is there evil
Or why do parents die
I didn’t care about the dinosaurs
Or why doesn’t God prove himself
My mind flew past questions of
Philosophy
Theology
Psychology
Physiology
And all of the other ologies that people have been arguing about for centuries

The question that rose up in me
Didn’t come from my mind,
But rose up from deep down on the inside
From deep dark

SPEAKER 1 AND 2:

dank hidden places
Where fears and insecurities live and fester

SPEAKER 2:
The question erupted from me
Tearing right past false me
Past false bravado
false macho
Even right past pride
No longer would it be silent
And wait
If God was listening
and going to answer
Then it would no longer be hidden
No longer be held-down
Made silent
Ignored
Destroyed
Repressed
Or dismissed
It had to know

SKEAKERS 2 AND 3:

And so it came
before I could stop it with other fears

SPEAKER 3:

Before
“I’ve got it all together” pushed back down
before
“Don’t let anyone see that you’re weak” forced it back down
it came
cause every piece of laughed at childhood had to know
all the memories of fat and slow had to know
all of the times when people had made me feel
pointless
loveless
friendless
homeless
worthless
useless
Had to know
(shouting now)
GOD!
AM I GOOD ENOUGH

(echo SPEAKER 2) Am I good enough

(echo SPEAKER 1) am I good enough

(the echoes should be on top of each other with just a short pause before the next person begins speaking. They should also sort of “fade” they move from the shout of SPEAKER 3 to the near whisper of SPEAKER 1)
