Intern Program

Alright so I have this guy who is a couple of years out of high school who wants to be a youth pastor, or at least he thinks he does. (Why would anyone want this job? Oh yeah late night Guitar Hero can be considered work). So this summer he is going to be my intern. YEAH ME! I GET AN INTERN! I want to do more than just give him the grunt work of my youth ministry. I also want to help him to fine tune his calling and to help him grow closer to Christ.

To this end I want to go through a couple of books with him this summer. Do you guys have any suggestions. I am trying to stay away from "youth ministry" books because those are things that he will need to read when he gets a job and by then the "experts" will be saying something different. I am looking for more spiritual growth type things. I am also staying away from the whole "Wild at Heart" thing because I tend to preach that stuff quite often. I have a few ideas, but I know I am forgetting something really good. Leave your suggestions in the comments.

    A couple of great ones:

Ministry Mutiny: a youth leader fable
    by Greg Stier

    Leading from the Second Chair
    Mike Bonem & ROger Patterson

    Falling for God
    Gary W. Moon

Purpose Driven Youth Ministry & Your First Two Years of Youth Ministry
    Doug Fields

IDEA: Give an update every couple of weeks about how the internship is going – the good and the bad – the stuff YOU are learning from it. That would be intersting.

    Hope this helps.

check out "Working the Angles: The Shape of Pastoral Integrity" by Eugene Peterson

    I recommend
"The Secret Message of Jesus" by Brian McLaren and "Velvet Elvis" by Rob Bell, both of will force him to think about his own faith and will challenge him to grow deeper.

"Messy Spirituality" by Mike Yaconelli is another good one in this vein, and John Eldredge’s (I know you don’t want WIld @ Heart, but this is a little different) "Journey of Desire" is one that looks at the Christian faith/life as the journey that it is.

Thanks for the ideas. Messy Spirituality is something I hadn’t thought of and that just might work. I actually haven’t heard of Peterson’s book so I might check it out. And I have been meaning to read Falling for God.

Great. Now I have even more books to choose from.

    All kidding aside, thanks guys.
