One Question

Last night we had a very short introduction to our prayer study. This is what I asked: “If you could ask God one question about prayer and knew you would get a straight answer what would you ask.” Some of them of course didn’t get the question, some of them gave your typical answers, but some of them were very honest with their responses. I wanted to share them here with you.

  • Why can’t you just answer audibly?
  • How can I hear you when I pray (other than through the Bible)?
  • Why did you take my parents?
  • Do you hear Michael Jackson’s Prayers?
  • Do you answer/listen to all prayers?
  • Why do you answer prayers in your own time?
  • What am I supposed to be doing? (I don’t know if this is a real question or someone questioning about the assignment)
  • Do I change what you’ve already planned when I pray? Do I change your mind?
  • How come you never grant my prayers about my friends?
  • Can you hear me?
  • Why are your answers sometimes so hard to swallow?
  • How does prayer work? It is hard to understand.
  • How come you said, “ask and it shall be given,” but it doesn’t happen?
  • Why didn’t I catch that shark? (What?)
  • Why don’t you answer every time I pray, when I have faith?
  • What should we not ask for?
  • Why did you not answer Jesus on the cross?
  • Why do we need to pray when you already know what we are going to ask?
  • Why don’t you answer prayers the way we want?
  • Why didn’t you answer my prayer to make me a superhero?
  • God, why don’t you let people hear your voice?
  • Do some questions bother you?
  • God when I pray am I just supposed to ask for needs, or am I supposed to talk to you like my diary or something?
  • Why don’t you answer my big prayers? It isn’t like I pray for money!
  • How do you decide between contrasting prayers?
  • How do you hear us no matter when or how we pray?

Do you have answers for those? If so, please share. I have a lot of the same questions…except for the shark one…

  2. The Average Youth Minister says:

So you too wonder if God hears Michael’s prayers?

  3. Allie H says:

I’m with Andy. I need some answers, Shane.

  4. The Average Youth Minister says:

I was looking back over the list and a most if not all of them can be answered with either "Because I’m God" or "I’m God". Of course that doesn’t really help the spirit of the exercise. When I told the students I actually said, "If God would give you and answer, and not an answer like he gave Job, but an answer like we think we want."

  5. Andy Crouch says:

Actually, yeah, I wonder about Michael’s prayers. Well, maybe not Michael specifically, but those that it’s fairly obvious that they aren’t believers, but yet pray to whoever they think God is that day. Before I was saved, I’m sure I prayed at the dinner table for God to bless the food. So, was that food blessed because of my prayer or not? Was my family running around with a lot of unblessed food in their belly? It’s all so confusing.

If you were baptized by someone who later turned out to not be a believer, is it still valid?
