Parents the Missing Piece of Youth Ministry

I am thinking about refining my title. Right now I am actually an associate pastor, but the title that I tell people is youth minister. The problem is that ministering to youth should only be half of my job (of course right now it is barely 1/4 of my job because of all of the other responsibilities I have, but that is a whole other post). The other half of my job should be the parents of those youth. I think a much better title would be minister to families with students, or something in that line. My job shouldn’t just be to the students it should be to their families as well.

That has been percolating in my head for a few weeks now and it really came home to me on my little sabbatical. If you haven’t checked out the KNOWN curriculum from Lifeway it is really worth the look. One of the cool things they are trying to do is reconnect student development with parents as it should be. This week I have been trying to figure out what I can let go of so that I can more effectively minister to the parents in my church. I will have to keep looking, but right now this seems like something that should be a priority.

As a parent of one of your former students (he is in college now), I would like to say how thankful I am for you and your love for our young people. You are truely a pastor (shepherd ) of this age group. I agree with you that encouraging parents should be part of youthministry. Maybe, during one of your youth concerts or cookouts, you could share with parents, too. Again, I want to say thank you for all you do and the joy and hope you bring to our kids. Blessings… Be strong and of good courage..for the Lord thy God is with thee. Joshua 1:9 a thankful parent
