Alright I finally got around to watching Spanglish tonight. I know I am late in the game, but my life has gotten crazy lately. Before I start talking about it I want to rant about people who screw up previews for movies. I know that you don’t want to give everything away in a preview, in fact I don’t want you giving anything away. But when you make a preview you had better darn well make it a preview for the movie you have not the movie you think more people will come to see.

Here is what I mean. If you have seen the previews of Spanglish you will remember that they were mostly (there was one TV spot that was a little different) focused on Adam Sandler and mainly focused on the jokes in the movie. It made the movie look like a little romantic comedy. If you have seen the movie you know that this is far from the truth. The reason why I bring this up is that I believe this movie suffered because of the messed up previews. The wrong people went to see it on opening weekend and they didn’t give it the right word of mouth (or buzz as the talk shows are so found of calling it.) People went looking for something like Wedding Singer or Mr. Deeds and what they found was something more along the lines of As Good as It Gets: a drama with some genuinely funny parts. The reviews that I got from other people kept me away from this movie at the theater and I really missed out. So Spanglish people you really messed up on the preview.

With all of that said you should go and watch this movie if you haven’t already watched it, and if you watched it expecting a comedy watch it again now that you know what to expect. There is a scene where the daughter is translating for her mother in a conversation with Adam Sandler that I think is one of the best scenes I have seen all year. Sure it gets a little maudlin at the end, but all in all it is good movie with some really great dialog. There are so few movies made anymore that have really crisp dialog and even though there were large chunks of the words in Spanish this was still a good movie.
